Sanctuary City

The play Sanctuary city, by Martyna Majok, is about to immigrant teens, brought to America as children, in Newark, NJ living in an immediate post 9/11 world. These two friends navigate the struggles of being an American at heart, but not by birth, in a country that is not accepting of the diverse people coming to its shore. Wanting to capture the aesthetic of the time period, while also accounting for the characters' lifestyles and personalities, I did a lot of research into styles of the late 90s and early 00s. Focusing on details like what clothing they would feel comfortable in, have access to, and the small details of wear on their clothing. Right down to the grim accumulated on shoes worn in the city and the coded shell necklaces popular during that time.
